MERLIN webinar

Copied from Multimodal Research Facebook page

We warmly invite you to the upcoming MERLIN webinar featuring Professor Theo van Leeuwen (University of Southern Denmark), a leading figure in multimodality. It is a conversation moderated by Associate Professor Emilia Djonov (Macquarie University) and inspired by Van Leeuwen’s vision of social semiotics as a multidisciplinary form of inquiry open to contributions from anyone interested in studying or inventing meaning-making resources and practices in different socio-cultural contexts.

The dialogue explores the interaction between advances in semiotic technologies, research on multimodality, and theories and practices of teaching and learning in different environments. Taking van Leeuwen’s collaborative work on semiotic software as a point of departure, the conversation examines continuities and shifts in the design and use of earlier technologies for making meaning and contemporary semiotic software.

The session highlights the value of multimodal social semiotics for addressing burning questions about agency, authenticity and creativity in the age of AI, and thereby promoting more thoughtful, critical, and inclusive approaches to teaching and learning.
